Dr. Alex Freeman previously spent 16 years as a science documentary-maker before returning to academia to lead a research team in evidence communication. It was at this point that she realized that the way that researchers had to communicate their work – rooted in previous centuries – was having a terrible effect on what research was done, how and by whom, as well as on the culture of academia. So she came up with the idea of a new way to do it, gained the support necessary and made Octopus a reality.
